IN 1731, THE VIRGIN MARY APPEARED TO SAINT ALPHONSUS Liguori as a young girl veiled in white. He later wrote a bedroom prayer through which one offers the hours of one’s sleep to Jesus Christ one’s God. Liguori’s prayer also includes a request for Jesus Christ one’s God to protect the sleeper during their hours of sleep, which implies that one can sin during one’s sleep, that one can sin without even intending to sin, just as one can dream without even intending to dream.

When I attended Catholic school, I learned a lot about sins and the ways that God punishes us for them. I learned that if something very bad happens to you, it happens for a reason. I learned that that reason is you.
